The impact of the adoption of ISO19650 as a National Standard Covering Information management throughout the built assets and infrastructure life cycle
Rudd van Deventer was trained as an architect and worked a few years in Pretoria before moving to Johannesburg and starting his own practice in 1981. He was employed from 1986 by Barclays National Bank, later First National Bank as their Group Architect. Part of his efforts was to initiate Facilities Management as a discipline in FNB and the country in conjunction with other corporates.
He left FNB in 1996 to start his SpaceWorx to focus on how buildings are used and strategic facility planning. The majority of SpaceWorx clients are corporate clients with property portfolios or were engaged in restructuring exercises and re-assessing their portfolios.
Sustainability has always been a major aspect of work in SpaceWorx, and they became members of GBCSA from 2008 and a member of the GBCSA Faculty since 2014. Besides, working on existing buildings and upgrading these have also driven the understanding of making buildings green, and assessing building performance. SpaceWorx’s many projects overlapped with Architecture, Facilities Management and building refurbishments.
Rudd was part of the Technical Working Group that compiled the Green Star SA Existing Buildings Performance Tool in 2014.
Rudd is a long-term member of SAFMA from when he was with First National Bank. Rudd is a member of the South African Institute for Architects (SAIA) practice committee with a focus on promoting BIM and the adoption of ISO 19650.
The progress of getting ISO 19650 adopted as a National Standard in South Africa is discussed, highlighting the advantages for Built Environment Professionals and pointing out what still needs to be done for adoption.
ISO 19650, published in 2018, is a critical Standard in promoting the use of BIM for the construction and asset management industries and will have far-ranging impacts on information management throughout the life cycle of built assets and infrastructure. The Standard will open opportunities for additional uses of data during construction and later in the management and maintenance of the facility.
ISO 19650 is a crucial step in South Africa’s adoption of BIM in setting the standard for the exchange of information, its updating and synchronisation across disciplines. Digitisation will loop in contractors and subcontractors setting up the flow of information to ensure the right information is available, when necessary, following the construction program. Aspects such as the LOIN – ‘Level of Information Need’ allows the design team to focus on the necessary rather than what is asked for outside of the critical path.
The adoption is underway and will impact everyone in the construction industry in one way or another. This will be a good opportunity to get a better understanding of what is in progress.
